Christmas in Quarantine: 7 Ideas for a Merry Holiday

Christmas should be merry no matter what, and this year is no exception. Even with the COVID-19 pandemic, this is a time to come together with our loved ones at home and create a positive and festive holiday. While there will be a noticeable lack of carollers and Salvation Army Santas, we can still celebrate joy this holiday season. Here are 7 ideas for creating a merry holiday, despite everything going on:

1. Buy a Christmas tree online.

Thanks to modern technology, a Christmas tree is a lot closer than we think. Luckily, this is one tradition we can keep. If you are worried or unable to pick one out in person, no worries! There are plenty of online ways to get a tree sent to your house. Walmart is offering live Christmas tree delivery where you can filter size, shape, and kind to find the tree that is right for you! The Home Depot is another classic Christmas tree location, and now they are offering free (in most cases) at-home delivery. Lowe’s is another great example of a business that is offering delivery and pickup of live Christmas trees! With so many available options, the joy of lighting a Christmas tree is not far away.

2. Organize a video call with Santa.

Are your kids missing out on their visits to Santa? Well, he is coming to your family in the virtual form! Santa’s Club is a great website that is offering a variety of packages to bring Santa back! These packages range in price, but all include personalized messages from the man himself. Show your kids that even with the pandemic, Santa is still working hard to bring joy to all the good boys and girls!

3. Have a Christmas movie marathon with a loved one.

What is Christmas without watching Macaulay Culkin get left Home Alone or seeing Frosty come to life with that magic hat? Luckily, between all of the streaming platforms and Hallmark movies, there are plenty of options for a Christmas movie marathon! Netflix has recently tons of new holiday movies destined to get anyone in the holiday spirit! Hope on a video call with a friend or snuggle close to the people you live with; you will not want to miss these old and new favorites!

4. Create an amazing Christmas atmosphere.

We need a little Christmas! With so much out of our control, decorating our homes in Christmas style can help create just the right atmosphere for joy and good tidings! Whether you create a playlist for your kitchen, design hand-made decorations, or wearing Christmas themed pajamas, you will be sure to get into the holiday spirit the right way! We will be spending a lot of time indoors this season, so why not make it as spectacular as possible? Set a budget and find the perfect pieces, or DIY to add your own personal touch! Whichever root you choose, your home will be ready to celebrate in style!

5. Organize a virtual craft session.

One great example of this is a gingerbread house competition! Hop on a call with family or friends and get to work creating gingerbread houses. When you are both done, have someone judge! This will make it feel like you are closer to these people by having an activity you can work on together. Another option is to follow along with the same YouTube video tutorial to create your own wreaths or other holiday craft! Your friends and family will be able to have similar decorations and be able to get into the spirit of the season together, apart.

6. Participate in online bingo and drinks with friends.

Online gaming is more popular than ever before! With so many options available, find the one that is most interesting to you and challenge your friends! You can even make it more interesting by adding prizes for one another. Virtual drinks with friends while playing games is a great way to make things feel a little more normal! Creating the perfect Christmas party is still possible, even with COVID-19 restraints.

7. Send gifts and have a virtual unwrapping.

Let’s be honest, giving and receiving gifts is one of the best parts of the season. Luckily, we can still use technology to connect with one another and keep that tradition alive. Get on a schedule with friends and family so gifts will arrive around the same time and call one another while opening them up! That way, you will still see the joy in their face when they open their gifts and be able to spread some holiday cheer without spreading germs!

It truly is the most wonderful time of the year, and COVID-19 raises no exception. While we may be farther than we would like from those we love, we can still take steps to interact safely with one another and celebrate the season. Remember, we are in this together, even from far apart. From all of us here at Mental Treat, have a happy holiday and Merry Christmas!
